What is a "behavioral assessment" at Charming Paws?
Behavioral Expectations & Evaluation at Our Daycare

At our daycare, we are deeply committed to creating a safe, positive, and enriching environment for every dog in our care. With years of experience in group dog settings and ongoing education in canine behavior and body language, our team stays current with the latest insights into social dog dynamics.

Our daycare is not a crated environment. From the start of the day to the finish, dogs are placed into carefully selected playgroups where they are free to play, rest, and hang out in large, open spaces. Because dogs are interacting in groups throughout the day, our behavioral assessments—and open, ongoing communication with pet parents—are absolutely essential for creating a safe and successful daycare experience.

All new enrollees are evaluated not only during their initial assessment but also throughout their time with us. This helps ensure each dog is comfortable, happy, and contributing positively to their group.

We want to be transparent about the behaviors that typically indicate a good fit for our daycare, as well as those that may suggest a different environment is better suited.

Behaviors That Make a Pup a Good Fit for Daycare:
-
Enjoys socializing with other dogs and reads cues well
-
Accepts redirection and guidance from staff
-
Can settle down during rest times and transitions
-
Shares toys, space, and attention without resource guarding
-
Engages in respectful play and avoids conflict escalation
-

Behaviors That May Not Be a Good Fit for Daycare:
-
Displays aggression or reactivity toward dogs or staff
-
Guards toys, food, or people in a group setting
-
Shows signs of excessive fear, anxiety, or stress in social situations
-
Has difficulty with impulse control (e.g., constant barking, jumping, or mounting)
-
Does not respond to staff redirection or consistently disrupts group play
That said, every dog is different. Some pups jump right into group play, while others may take time to adjust. We’re confident in our ability—and happy—to work with both dogs and their people to find the best path forward. If a pup needs a bit more time, we’ll do our best to support them, as long as their behavior does not pose a risk to other dogs or staff.

Open communication is incredibly important to us. We welcome any and all questions you may have—we’re always happy to provide insight and help you fully understand your dog’s daycare experience.
